Three Years Overdue

This plant was a gift when Ian was born. It had a couple other specimens in it when we got it, which, you’ll not be surprised to know, I’ve managed to kill in the intervening four years. But it desperately needed a re-pot, so I took advantage of this:

and this:

to turn this:

into this:

Now all I need to do is wait and see if I’ve killed them.

Garden Progress

Here’s a little treasure I picked up from the dollar bin at Target:

Ian's Little Herb Garden

We had a little fun Mommy-Son moment planting exactly five seeds in each pot this morning. (He also counted out each of the 3 Tablespoons of water you’re to add to each pot.) We’ll see if they survive past the instruction to “transplant when plants are 3″ tall…” You may or may not remember that “transplant” usually means “it all goes wrong” around here.

Here’s the rest of Ian’s little garden:

Pansies, a pumpkin, and Mommy's "Surprise."

Intro to Gardening

You know, given my ability to kill things at multiple stages of plant development, I hope I’m not setting him up for disappointment, but Ian is taking a gardening class for little people. There is a good reason I usually either start things from seed OUTDOORS or buy established plants… this starting from seed thing is not my strong point. The class is run through the Fairfax County REC Center and is taught by Miss Claire, who he LOVES.  (Really, I can’t say enough good things about her.)

Do you get the sense he's having a good time?

Chattin’ with Miss Claire

They planted tomatoes and herbs and made cute little signs to label their “pizza gardens.”  Ian was over the moon. I’ll keep you posted on how we do at keeping it alive…

Whoops

Dahlias, Day 12

Ian and I planted Dahlias.  This is as far as they got because, early this morning, he decided to carry them ALL BY HIMSELF. And dropped them.  We’re going to try and give it another shot with the remaining seed, but my famous black thumb might carry the day once we aren’t working from the exact instructions on the kit.  We’ll see.
